The Hummel figurines that Goebel is most famous for producing are uniformly "cute." The first figurines were sold in 1935, and have since become a kitsch icon. The figurines are all based on the drawings and paintings of children by sister Hummel. Though much of the art was done in the 1930s, the newer figurines have adopted a more contemporary appearance.
In addition to the figures of children (which are what most people think of as "Hummels"), there are also Hummel saints which bear no resemblance stylistically to the playful children figurines.
Sister Hummel's works were discovered by Franz Goebel after a small publisher began printing her artwork as postcards. Goebel started production of the figurines under the authorization of the Convent of Siessen. Although she died in 1946 from tuberculosis, Goebel carries her legacy.
Goebels announced on 2008-06-18 that the Hummel line will be discontinued.

No. 1 Price Guide to M.I.Hummel Figurines, Plates, Miniatures, & More (Mi Hummel Figurines, Plates, Miniatures & More 10th Ed. (Mi Hummel Figurines, Plates, ... Plates, Miniatures & More Price Guide)ReviewsI recently started a hummel collection. This book is a MUST have. Hummel collecting can be complicated and making sure that you are getting a good value is almost impossible without this book. I highly recommend it. The book, as a resource guide, contains a wealth of information; it is a very useful, very informative reference guide. The binding, however, stinks. Within 1 day of using the book in a normal manner, the pages started to come out due to the inferior method of glue binding. They should have stuck to the spiral binding method. this book was very nice and the added touch of color pictures was a pleasant surprise. This book made it extremely easy to reference, cross-reference and catalog my collection of Hummels. Although I realize that the market value of these figurines changes frequently, the book will still give me a starting point for years to come. We have remained collectors of Hummel Figurines since 1971. Currently we have some 93 Hummel Figurines and 1971 thru 1982 Hummel Anniversary Plates. We like to keep up with the current values of these beautiful collectible pieces and have found the Robert L. Miller price guide to be full of great information and very thorough. We truly enjoyed our visit to W.Gobel Porzellanfabrik GmbH & Co. KG located in Rodental, Germany where we were invited to watch and speak with so many artists at work. Note: Amazon.com. Thank You for your dedicated Great Service. Sincerely, Charles E. Brock Sr. Average Rating:![]() |

Luckey's Hummel Figurines and Plates: Identification and Price Guide (12th Edition)ReviewsThis book is very helpful if you are buying or wanting to know the retail price of a hummel or if there are any markings you should be looking for. Luckey's does give some extra information on some hummels that Miller doesn't have in his book. One thing that would be helpful is to have color pictures of the figurines since many times a figurine's color determines it's age. This book holds all the information any collector will need. I found it to be very useful. I was hesitant to purchase Luckey's 12th Edition Price Guide because I have always relied on Robert L. Miller's No. 1 Price Guide in the past. However, curiosity got the better of me and I'm glad it did. It's a great reference, and a very good companion to Miller's guide. The main advantage Miller's 10th Edition No. 1 Price Guide has is all figurines are now shown in color... but the images are smaller than in previous editions. Since Luckey's guide (updated by Dean Genth) is presented in a larger format, it has larger images and text, which makes it easier to read. It also displays more images of the older trademark figurines to show the differences between the older figurines and their current production versions a bit better. This was important to me because I generally prefer to collect the older, more rare figurines. Figurine pricing is now essentially the same between the two guides, which isn't surprising considering Dean Genth owns Miller's Hallmark in Eaton, OH, the home of Robert Miller. For the average collector, or one that usually tends to purchase the newer released items, Robert Miller's guide is now more up to date. However, for the truly serious collector, Luckey's guide has more or different information on some of the more rare figurines such as those made in white overglaze and sold only in Belgium in the early days. Since I own several of these figurines, I found the information contained in Lucky's guide very useful. Highly recommended for both the novice or serious collector... but don't forget to purchase Miller's book too. A absolute must have resource - well organized, descriptive, and easy to use. It has served me exceptionally well each time I have had to use it! I have quiet a few Hummel books, but Luckey's Hummel Figurines and Plates, 11nd Edition is my favorite. The book did educate me in the different Trade Marks on the bottom of the Figurines, The Authors explanation is simple and clear. I purchased many Hummel figurines at Internet Auctions and found that the "Current Value" prices of Mr. Luckey's book are very conservative and very closed to the final Auction prices! I do recommend this book, it is the "real" thing! Average Rating:![]() |

No. 1 Price Guide to M.I. Hummel Figurines, Plates, More... (Mi Hummel Figurines, Plates, Miniatures & More Price Guide)ReviewsI have to sell at least 50 or so Hummels on ebay and trying to identify and get prices is very hard. I have used 2 other books but this one is the BEST! I have one and will give you information on the Hummel Silk Carpet.(The Book lacks this information) On the back is a tag stitched to it saying: M.J. Hummel ORIGINAL HUMMEL SILK CARPET HANDKNOTTED IN BEIJING, CHINA. ARS AG, ZUG, SWITZERLAND LIMITED EDITION :10 /50 Also there is a tag attached to the SILK CARPET written in both Chinese and English ZHE JIANG SILK RUG I am giving this information because the book does not have a picture of this HUMMEL SILK CARPET and not sure about the information I just posted. VALUE UNKNOWN but it is Very Beautiful I have all, since the first publication, of Robert Miller's Price Guide to MI Hummel Figurines, Plates, Miniatures and More.Mr. Miller has all the knowledge one would expect & want to find in his books after much research and many trips to Germany to gain this knowledge. This is THE HUMMEL BIBLE! I highly recommend this book to all Hummel collectors or to anyone interested in the collecting of fine arts. Very well written with explicit details about Sister MI Hummel's life in Massing, Germany & her schooling. Each known Hummel is pictured & tells of the Master Artist who molded each three dimentional figurine from the drawings by Sister beginning in the 1930's to the present TMK markings. A great investment for Insurance purposes when appraising your figurines by The Hummelking! This book is very well illustrated, well layed-out, easy to use, and the pictures are very beautiful. It's full of information, explains more than I expected, and it is a MUST for Hummel collectors. not only is this a complete guide -- but it is so easy to use -- anyone owning or buying Hummel's should have this -- I only wish I could find Guides like this for my other collectables -- Average Rating:![]() |
